The remit of the Senate will change over time - but initially the key areas of responsibility will be:
- Providing clinical leadership at the heart of the PCT with the aim of achieving a smooth transition to GP Commissioning by beginning to build key elements of the new system before 2013
- Making decisions on issues which cannot appropriately be taken at GP commissioning locality level. Such issues include the PCT Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention Programme.
- Ensuring that local GP commissioning groups are properly supported by PCT staff through the prioritisation of PCT work plans and the allocation of resources
- Developing consensus on GP Consortium configuration
- Overseeing the development of possible future commissioning support services
- Engaging with other organisations, for example the shadow Health and Well Being Board.
