Better health and wellbeing for people with a learning disability and their families

The NHS in the East of England is committed to to improving the health and wellbeing of people with a learning disability and their families. People with a learning disability can have greater health problems than the general population. They can also have unequal access to health services, often through a lack of reasonable adjustments to meet their needs.

The NHS in the East of England has written a draft Vision for better health and well being for people with a learning disability and their families. This Vision sets out the NHS East of England's proposed aims and commitments in the East of England over the next 10 years. The Vision focuses on putting people with a learning disability at the centre of what the NHS does. We must ensure that everyone is treated as a person, not with a learning disability label, supporting them to make informed and personal choices and ensuring that they have equal access and equivalent health outcomes to the rest of the community. Having better health is a big issue for people with a learning disability. We know of many people who could have better health. It has a big effect on their lives and what they can or cannot do. This is just as important for children as it is for adults.

The NHS in the East of England is running a public consultation on this draft Vision, in order to gather views on this.

The consultation runs from 12 October 2010 to 11 January 2011.
