Jabs & immunisations

Immunisation is one of the most important methods for protecting individuals and the community from serious diseases. This involves giving a vaccine that allows the body to develop immunity against illness such as measles or influenza. Once people have been immunised their bodies can fight those diseases if they come into contact with them.

There is a recommended schedule for childhood immunisations. More information on childhood immunisations is available at http://www.immunisation.nhs.uk

Having your children immunised gives them the best chance of developing immunity against these diseases in a safe and effective way and minimises their risk of catching the diseases.

Immunisation is also effective in protecting from seasonal or pandemic flu in vulnerable individuals. Although most people recover from flu within a week, for some people the infection is more serious and leads to complications. These illnesses may require treatment in hospital and can be life-threatening especially in the elderly, people with heart or chest disease and those in poor health.

Your local GP will give childhood immunisations according to the recommended schedule. They are available to answer any questions you might have about vaccines. Your GP can also advise whether you or your children should have a seasonal flu jab and will arrange for this to be given.

In April 2009, a new influenza virus emerged leading to a global pandemic. A safe and effective vaccine was produced and has been offered to those at highest risk of developing complications if they contract the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. The vaccine will continue to be available through GP practices to high-risk groups until the start of the next flu season.
