  • 57 million GP consultations every year involve minor ailments which can be handled through self-care.
  • A common cold can last for up to 21 days yet only four per cent of people would continue to self treat for 15-28 days
  • There are around 15 million people inEnglandwith a long term condition
  • A 2005 MORI survey showed that more than 90% of patients with a long term condition were interested in taking a more active role in their care.
  • People with long term conditions are the most frequent users of health services and account for 55% of all GP appointments, 68% o outpatients and A&E appointments.
  • It is estimated that the treatment and care of people with long term conditions accounts for 70% of the total health and social care spend inEngland, or almost £7 in every £10 spent.
